Case example

Developed 10-years strategy - strategy workshops being a key driver - for the Community Services BU of a large Australian NFP organization

Context

  • A leading Australian aged care and social service provider needed to develop a 10-year growth strategy for its Community Service BU (c.20% of total organization revenues)

  • The strategy targeted 3 primary goals:

    • Geographical expansion in regional areas

    • Increased focus on early intervention

    • Delivery of high social impact services in a financially sustainable way

  • The organization engaged BC Strategy to support the strategy design and the development of business cases for 5 growth portfolios

Approach

  • The team conducted strategy workshops with clients to identify the key growth levers and expected evolution of the service mix in each portfolio

  • The strategy considered on the policy outlook, the organization’s capabilities and strengths, and alignment to the strategy objectives

  • 10-year P&L and customer projections were developed for each portfolio, including internal investment required, ensuring financial sustainability in the long term

  • “Social impact cases” were developed for each portfolio, outlining expected social outcomes of the strategy as well as targets for key metrics (e.g., # of regional customers served)

Outcome

  • A 10-year strategy to help drive an increase in revenue from $240m to $400m was developed, including clear actionable levers

  • The client presented the business cases to its Board of Directors to seek approval for the investments

  • The business cases were used to inform the implementation roadmaps for the individual portfolios
