Just renting the boom? AI contribution to economic growth.
AI is doing more to grow Australia's economy than America's. But what we have does not compound in the same way.
Outside the US, Australia is one of the powerhouses for AI infrastructure. A >$150bn data-centre pipeline spend that, with the energy build attached, will materially impact GDP.
Last quarter (Q3 FY26), AI-linked investment drove ~63% of Australia's GDP growth; a larger share than in the US (~52%). Across the year it's ~21%.
Where is the catch? We're renting the boom, not owning it.
~71% of that AI capex leaks straight back offshore as imported hardware. We retain about 29 cents in the dollar; the US keeps ~56, because it builds the stack at home, invests in R&D and software. In the latest quarter AI added roughly $880m here and $12.5bn there; a US AI economy around 14× ours, compounding far more of it locally.
And renters don't hold the keys. Within days of gaining access to Anthropic's Fable 5, a US directive cut it off for every foreign user — overnight. Frontier access turned out to be a policy lever in Washington, not an asset in Canberra.
The value that does land is thin: highly automated sites, little local payroll, profits largely booked offshore. We wear the externalities - grid strain, water, displaced workers - and bank little of the upside.
The way out isn't a $1bn sovereign model. It's the unique advantage we can't import: low-cost open source LLMs as alternative to expensive frontier compute, renewable energy and grid infrastructure, a high-trust governance regime that makes us the jurisdiction others choose to build with.
In a world in which your enterprise token and data spend might become as sizeable as your payroll, the same question now sits in every boardroom: do we own our advantage, or just rent it?
